Ghana Empire began with the Soninke farmers who helped developed trade routes for iron, sheep, cattle, gold salt, honey, leather and cloth. They developed a process called silent barter, whereby salt was traded for gold without person to person contact (similar to e-bay, amazon: you buy pay for goods and never see the seller). Thus, the Ghana Empire reached its peak under the leadership of Tunka Manin.
